Movie Review: Season of Good Rain / A Good Rain Knows (2009) – Korean Movie

Here we have a Korean movie, mostly in English, filmed in China, starring a Korean actor and Chinese actress. It started off as a short film and was later turned into a feature film. Exciting? Yes. For me at least. I love co-productions, especially when they’re done right.  Season of Good Rain can be added to my top list of pan-Asian-cinema movies along with 26 Years Diary and The Longest Night in Shanghai.

When I said exciting, I really meant it — from a production point at the very least. There are just so many dynamic elements from the production, the cast, the setting and the languages. And perhaps the icing on the cake was the fact that it was “originally intended as the second segment of Chengdu, I Love You (1) and then later expanded into what it is today. With that comes the controversial / mixed review element of the film which is that it was put together in different segments. I for one believe it added to the artistic integrity and in no way hurt it.

As for the story itself, I loved it. I’m a sucker for some meaningful melodrama that can complement romanticism. For me, this film was simple even with all its layers. Deeper meaning and themes intertwined with simple spoken English and a light story. The cinematography explores Chengdu, the poetic references sway the plot, and the on-screen chemistry create a unique and subtle romance. So, great acting and great story in my books.

A traveling architect meets an old friend from his student years; the pair realize their connection has always been a romantic one.” (IMDb)
