Election (2005/6) – Chinese Movie – Review

election1

Election is no Y&D with massive machete gang fights and all that jazz — instead the film depicts the inner workings of the triad society. It deals with the power struggles, leadership, loyalty, clashes and of course an election to elect the new leader. The election itself is full of politics and the society is like a social game.

Election trailer:

It was just on TV so of course I had to watch it, again. Quentin Tarantino said it was the best movie of 2005 — and this guy knows what he is talking about. After the sequel, the movies were dubbed more or less The Godfather of HK. As films coming from director Johnny To, this is no surprise. Exiled is also another great film by him to watch as a unique take on a triad story with a mix of action, crime and an old western feel.

Election II is also a must see in order to see the full story being told. The sequel continues after the first’s events, centers around a new election and draws deeper into the business/political threads of the triad society.

Election II trailer:

I really enjoy these types of movies, with a slow pace to the action/plot turning points but real substance in between — overall just good stories. The build ups to the violence are tweaked just right — the sequel probably has some more memorable or “epic” triad/gangster violence scenes.

aparoo says 5/5,  its like running for class president — but with more money, power and violence?
